Undercoat your model in the colour that suits the scheme [or the scratch colour you want], fully paint and weather the model, and run a sharp new X-Acto blade down the sides of the vehicle where the branches would run. Its important to realise that they are not deep scratches that break the paint down to primer level, more scratches that just break the dusty/dirty surface to create a difference in colour.
