Paul,

My thought was to actually mix Mig or another pigment with flat varnish, making it into a stable paintable mixture and actually apply it like paint. The other method would be to use something like a textured medium, Vallejo do pumice or lava, mix it with pigment paint it on in the pattern you want. That will look like applied mud.

Plus models make something I think in tinlets but I have never tried it.
