I have found that Green Putty will work if you are using a knife to slice individual ridges in the putty, but if you are trying to simulate the more uniform combed or rolled patterns, it turns into a colossal mess. It hardens from the outside in as the thinner evaporates, so the tool tears off the "skin" the forms on the surface, and the inner layer of the putty is still soft and goopy and won't hold the pattern.
Milliputt epoxy putty works well, though it's pretty dense--you have to apply really firm pressure to "comb" it. Tamiya offers a two-part polyester putty to use with their zimmerit combs, but I haven't tried it out yet. |
