Having seen these in european museums and having seen personal pictures from the era.Most barrels were indeed a "Blued" color or deep "gun metal" finish.
In some cases the barrels had been painted in similiar camouflage colors as the rest of the vehicle. But due to continuous vibration from usage as well as travel, theenvironment, chipping paint etc. It was NOT the normal prctice.
