| Also unless i'm mistaken these were both the anti aircraft version of the 20 mm and where designed to have the barrel replaced at a fairly regular rate, which would preclude most chances that the barrel would be seen in any type of paint or camo scheme. Of course after having said that I would not be surprised to see instances where the barrel was painted. I would think the most likely possibility of this happening would be in the SDKFZ 222, and not the half track. Typically the German armed forces were very meticulous about maintenance and such things as removing items that were not to be painted if a vehicle was getting a fresh coat of paintup until the last stages of the war when necessity made some jobs such as this much farther down the list of "have to do". Also I imagine that the fairly high heat generated from firing the gun would make quite a stink and a mess of any paint that happened to get on the barrel, which would I think generally make the crew interested to make sure the barrels did not recieve any type of paint, whitewash, or probably even the occasional improvised mud camos. |
