I've been using a small shop compressor for a few years now, and I must say that for a little over $200, it's one of the best investments I've made. I had originally bought to use with my airbrush after my $200+ "artist", tank-less compressor stopped working after one single model!
Additionally, as Ross pointed out, the shop compressor can be used for a variety of other pruposes like inflating car and bicycle tires, cleaning tools and powering nail guns (which is great for putting up door frames and crown moldings).
I've never bought a water trap for my compressor and yet I haven't had any problem with regards to this so far (I use Tamiya acrylic paints diluted with alcohol).
Cheers!
