Matt,

I would recommend painting them a steel color. I would not use metallic Gray, but rather do this three step process.

Base coat it in Flat Black
Dry brush using chrome silver. Use a small, short bristle rush and with very little paint, scrub the silver over the flat black.
Lastly, give it a thin wash of flat black.

This gives a much better steel appearance, in my opinion. Further, to weather the jack, dry brush a light coat of raw umber for old rust.
