Subject:  Acrylic Flat Coat Over Panzer GrayList thread.

 Date:  Feb 9, 2007
 From:  Matt Weisberger
I am in the process of finishing two German WWII vehicles in overall panzer gray.

I sprayed them Tamiya flat black then oversprayed that with Tamiya German Gray with a bit of Flat Earth added. I achieved a nice "cloud" pattern on both models.

I like an acrylic coat for the purpose of sealing the base coat, applying the decals and an oil paint pin wash around the details.

On a third test hull, with the same scheme applied, I sprayed a coat of Vallejo Clear Matte to determine the effect it would have on the paint before doing so on the actual models.

I discovered two things as a result:

1) The Vallejo Clear Matte is not flat but actually has a slight sheen.
2) The clear coat makes the paint slightly darker and the cloud pattern effect is essentially lost as the paint takes on a uniform appearance.

I sprayed some testors Dullcote over the Vallejo Matte and found that it flattens the finish somewhat. It had little effect on the now uniform apppearance on the "cloud pattern"

I have applied Tamiya Clear, with the flattening agent added, to previous models in overall O.D. without this problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions about this?
