Taylor,

As far as my research has been able to ascertain the Japanese painted their vehicles at the factory including camouflage. Color schemes changed from 1932 to 1945. If you are modeling the Tamiya Chi-Ha circa 1942 or prior the camouflage colors would be Tochi-iro土地ー色 (earth), Kusa-iro 臭ー色(grass green), Karekusa-iro 彼臭ー色 (parched grass), Akakuro-iro 赤くロー色(red brown) and Kiro-iro 気ロー色llow). Kiro is the jungle yellow stripe used in early Japanese armor. The Ho-Ni I would use Tochi-iro 土地ー色(earth), Karekusa 彼臭ー色(parched grass) and Orufudorabu-iro おる不どら部ー色(olive drab). As far as a base color most vehicles of the army were painted Karekusa-iro (parched grass) and marine and navy vehicles were painted Mitsubishi midori-iro 三菱緑ー色 (Mitusbishi green). More likely the interior of the Ho-Ni would be painted Karekusa-iro.

From what I could find for colors:

Tochi-iro - Vallejo Mahogany
Kusa-iro - Tamiya IJA Green
Karekusa-iro - Tamiya Khaki
Akakuro-iro - PollyScale Panzer Red Brown
Kiro-iro - PollyScale Japanese Yellow
Orufudorabu-iro - Tamiya Olive Drab
Mitsubishi Midori-iro - Tamiya Mitsubishi IJA Green

Gunze-Sangyo has just come out with a japanese armor color set that includes Tochi-iro, Karekusa-iro and Kusa-iro. HobbyLink Japan has the set. I have not seen the set.

All the colors stated are acrylics. I don't use enamels or laquers but I'm sure there are colors close to what I stated.

My Japanese translations aren't perfect but should be close.

Hope that helps,

Mike Bedard
