Jerry makes some excellent points and he is correct.
In addition to models, I also do artwork, sometimes in oils. A few comments:
Since oils are slow drying as Jerry mentioned, you have the opportunity to add a slight shade after a while (even a day or two later in most cases), and you can blend to your hearts content.
Also, here in the US you can buy a product known as "Japan Dryer" that accelerates the drying of oil paints if you want the oils to dry quicker (I am also a Chem Engr, so for the technical types out there: this product essentially accelerates the attack on the double bonds in the linseed oil molecules, and if I recall they tend to polymerize with other oil molecules, thereby resulting in that toughened "skin").
I would suggest doing a wash (and a very light wash, at that) only after you have all the tones and shadows done with your main colors.
