The steel wheels scheduled for the Panther F were postponed pending availability of a suitable track. The test batch of Panther G's fitted with steel wheels in 1944 suffered an unacceptable level of track guide tooth breakages, so rubber rimmed wheels remained standard. The plan was to introduce a double link track with a single center guide on alternate teeth, but it was never actually produced. The Panther F's awaiting construction in Berlin in 1945 would have carried the rubber tired wheels and standard tracks, and this is depicted in the Dragon Cyber Hobby kit.
The kit also includes a G hull so one of the turret testbeds can be depicted. The test vehicle in the photo had a muzzle brake as well.
The unrelated Panther II (canceled in 1943) was to share running gear and track components with the King Tiger. |
