It appears that for the most part, German 200L fuel drums were not painted at all. They were made from treated steel (similar to galvanizing) and the result was a mid to dark gray slightly mottled color. The top rims and rolling bands were made from normal steel That may have been varnished or the like. On surviving drums, these are a dark brownish gray. I saw at least adozen of these on recent trips to Europe and all had similar coloring.
