One little word of warning: use CHALK pastels, not oil pastels, or you'll end up with a hell of a mess. They're often side-by-side in art shops but even if the label has fallen off (not as rare as you'd hope), you can tell them apart by feel and smell.

But they are fantastic, far cheaper than specialist pigments, and every colour of the rainbow (plus a few more that don't exist in nature). I tried them out for the first time a few months back and I'm sold. I don't exactly grind mine - I rub off as much as I need on an old needle file onto a piece of paper, and top up the heap as necessary. Then it's in with the old knackered paint brush. This way you can mix your colours as you need them and even try them out by applying the mix to the paper before you commit to the kit.
