Hi Steve: It's funny you mention T Greenland because his overuse of muzzle blackening is one of the single most distracting things (read annoying) that I see in his models. One of the dangers of using another model for reference, I suppose. I'm strongly in the "little to none Muzzle blackening camp".
Look at the attached photo. It's a Polish M4A2, painted in desert camo. You see the sand color on the top part of the gun tube and the white counter shading on the lower half. You see where both colors have chipped revealing the original OD beneath. At the muzzle's tip, you see where even the OD has worn showing bare metal.
If this is how a veteran tank looks like, I feel safe to say that the "dipped in inkwell" look of some modellers goes too far. Of course photos exist that show some level of staining -- I don't argue that. It's just WAY overdone IMHO.
Again, it's my opinion. I would advise against using Greenland's models (albeit worth some money) as reference versus the real thing. Remember people paid $100s on ebay for "pro built" piles o' junk. What are T Greenland's chances of making this mistake? From actual tank veteran's recollections, it seems like 100%.
Best regards,RC |
