I posted the following questions as part of an overall question about Panzer
I references in the "construction" group, but I'm interested enough in the
possible answers that I thought I'd ask the questions again in a slightly
more pointed form in the appropriate group:

I'm looking to get back into doing some plastic scale modelling after a 20+
year absence .... (I haven't been *completely* out of the hobby since I
also collect and paint 25mm metal figures, although those are fantasy/SF
rather than historical.)

I currently have a mix of acrylics: Tamiya, Humbrol and Games Workshop.
Years ago I used to have a large collection of Humbrol Enamels but I found
that working with the Acrylics was so much easier that I let all the little
tins dry up. For fantasy figure painting, variety of colours is more
important than "accuracy", so my current paint collection is, um, well,
colourful, but probably not super relevant for painting tanks .

So, I'm interested in pointers on particularly good colours to look for (in
the sense of "essential for panzers", I mean). As long as they're
acrylic-compatible I'm not fussy about brand.

A. Dark yelllows, greys ,browns and greens Model Master has an acrylic and
an enamel range with very good colours .Get one of thier colour charts and
have a squizz.
Tamiya colours are also very good ,both in enamels and acrylics.

Or am I way out-of-date in the belief that I must use acrylics OR enamels
but never both?

A I use both , mainly enamels ,but if I use both the enamels are always the
base colour. You cant ( read shouldnt )spray enamels over acrylics.
Having said that I very often spray an enamel clear coat over a model where
I have used acrylics, but there usually is a good weeks drying time.

I have to admit that out of laziness I prefer working straight from the
bottle, more or less, but I'll happily listen to colour-mixing-and-matching
suggestions. I don't, currently, own or have any experience with an
air-brush but I suspect that will change before too long .

A This URL will take you to a Tamiya database for mixing colours:
