Well, just my thoughts. Agreed some are overdone (even some of mine). However even though the Germans (for example) used smokeless powder, the temperature of the gasses coming out of the barrel and muzzle break must have been hot enough to darken most any paint. And, especially towards the end of the war the Germans were doing much more firing than painting.
Again, I am no expert (ex Navy, not Army) but just a thought. |
