The "Black" muzzles you see, which I agree are uncommon and easily overdone, are still possible with smokeless powder. True, it doesn't have the big puffy white clouds of black-powder, but it still does have carbon soot in there to some degree. The gas cylinder of my Garand will surely agree, and cleaning carbon out of the reciever and gas system of an M-16 is one of the most annoying weapons cleaning I can think of.

It's just that it takes a LOT of firing for a good amount of carbon to build up at the muzzle. Part of maintenance on anything with a big gun, is cleaning the tube, so it's regularly going to get cleaned off. Most tanks won't fire enough between cleanings to see it build up and become visible.

Though, just for fun, here is a whitewashed Tiger with a nicely blackened muzzle brake.
