Steven -
Photos of German tanks on the firing range and the battlefield show plenty of something discharging from the muzzle besides the shell. Photos of German tanks in or returning from the battle field often show darkening of the muzzle break, which I would speculate depends on the time elapsed and how many rounds were fired between opportunities to clean the barrel. It might also depend on how many tree branches scraped off upper layers of paint and what lower layers were exposed.
I try to base my models on photographed vehicels. When that is not possible, I use photos of the same kind of vehicle in similar circumstances to the one I want to build. If you work from photos and do what the photos show, then anyone who complains is just plain argumentative and not worth your time. If you're doing what pleases you, then be content and happy with what you're doing, make lots of models to your personal highest standards; just don't mistake artistic license for historic authenticity.
People tend to get so po'ed over this distinction, but it seems basic to me. You're either recapturing a moment in history or you're inventing an historic possibility or you're doing what you damn well please. The last should be judged on purely aesthetic grounds, unless you're claiming it's one of the first two. The middle case is most difficult to judge, but it must remain within a restricted range of possibilities, and - again - a lot depends on what the builder is claiming. Artistic license is not historic authenticity.
Best to all,
CTew
