I don't ever recall painting parts while still attached to the sprue.
I usually build the model as complete as I can prior to painting. This involves building as many sub-assemblies as required for those hard-to-get-at paint areas and I will also mount individual parts on brass rods, sprue shafts etc for ease of and thoroughness of the painting process. I've always painted road wheels individually off the sprue.
