Here's my latest recipe for tracks. It's a bit complex but the final result is very good.
1) Primer. I use Floquil grey primer.
2) Flat black lacquer. Tracks are painted in a flat black material as a rust preventative.
3) Heavy dry brushing with a dark grey lacquer such as gunmetal. Nothing will hold up to the kind of wear and tear tracks take so you'll want to get a lot of bare metal showing through that back coat.
4) Rust wash. Give the tracks a heavy wash with a half and half mix of rust and dark earth.
4) Lacquer Dullcoat. This not only seals the work you’ve done so far but it prepares it for the next step.
5) Make a wash with mix of appropriate earth or sand color using Turpenoid (blue label) and your favorite pigments. The Turpenoid will react adversely with the Dullcoat. This will cause your tracks to take a while to dry but it has the beneficial side effect of causing your pigments to set like real dirt. It also binds the pigments in such a way they look good and stay in place in spite of handling.
6) Drybrush steel. All the high points should be drybrushed in a steel color. |
