Many thanks to you all for you help!
In response to some of your comments;
My airbrush is always carefully cleaned after using, so I don't think that is a problem. I have also used the exact same conditions to spray thinned Tamiya paint, which resulted in a real nice flat coat with none of the "spitting" that I am getting when I add the Tamiya clear. This result, with just the paint, does suggest that the nozzle is clean and undamaged (hence the frustration!)
Jerry, I really like the end result in previous models when I add Tamiya clear, it gives a lovely eggshell finish which is ideal for washes (took the mixture straight from Tony Greenland's book).
Following all your advice I think I will try thinning a little more and/or turning up the pressure of my compressor.
Thanks again
