that if chipping exists on modern vehicles, with their high quality paints/coatings and excellent maintenance, why won't it exist on older vehicles with little cosmetic maintenance and older less durable paints?

Watch what happens when modern tankers toss hawsers, sledge hammers, damaged road wheels and any other heavy metal paraphenailia on a vehicle. Or what happens when they brush a stone wall or another vehicle. Most modern vehicles get plenty scratched - but they are touched up after coming in from the field.

I hazard a guess that nobody on this forum ever saw a Panzer 3 or Sherman after 3-4 months out in the field, except in a B&W photo which we have proven beyond any reasonable doubt doesn't transmit tonal difference between darker colors. I would say part of the reason you don't see scratches on Shermans and Panzer 3s is that the film can't tell the difference - it's all one dark tone. Common sense will tell you there's wear and tear around tool stowage, simply because it's removed and slammed back into the holders without a lot of regard for cosmetic appeal.

I agree it can be over done - and often is. But to discount it's existance is to have never walked onto a construction site and seen heavy machinery after it's been out in the field for a month or so.

Chipping simply needs to be used in a common sense approach. I can recall a series of reference pictures of a brand new LeClerc in a modeling mag not long ago. Right in the middle of the turret front armor was a gouge of paint missing - with attendant colors from the gouge. This vehicle was babied and still lost paint. A machine in combat get much worse wear and tear.

I say chip it! Just don't over chip it!
