I have good luck with the toothpick method only becaue I use only Tamiya and Polly S acrylics, and they are real easy to remove. The burnishing the flat black works well, you jus have to be careful not to rub through. I'm lucky that I have a nice bottle of black from the Badger Model FLex line thats meant for airbrushing, but I find that it hand brushes very nicely. It flows like thick ink, and gives a nice satin sheen.
I think if you used Pauls method and used the permanent marker instead of paint, you could get a more even result. But, without the silver background, the green/blue may be hard to see. The silver gives a nice relecive background and lets the color stand out a bit better, plus gives some additional depth.
Cheers
