That was the discussion. I was not present for it, but remember reading summaries (like yours above) of the discussion. Though I don't always agree with Jentz, I cannot argue with the amount of work he put into what he does. If he saw these pieces in pristine or near-pristine condition and comes up with the Tamiya color as the closest out of the bottle match at 1:1 scale, then that's good enough for me, and all I need to do is lighten it a bit and go from there. After weathering, etc., it should be fine. Sort of the same thing modelers do with their US OD. Get it close, lighten it, and then weather away.

Like some others have posted here, I think that modelers get too caught up in the perfect color, and then forget about all of the things you mentioned in your post (scale effect, lighting, etc.).
