Hi Ted,
I think it's up to your preference. It's easier to use a round one for outlining the pattern (easier to paint curves), and the rest with a flat. The size depends on the scale/size of the vechicle and the pattern itself, but generally use the biggest size that can handle the details (would say never smaller than a 2).
