Ian: This also brings to mind the questions of, how deep is a hole? How big is a tree? How long is a rope? These, like your question; has an almost infinite number of correct answers.
Be aware that the first thing to remember is what ever looks good to you is good enough. Second the reality is that In WWII Russian armor, or armour if you are English, was a very dark green. However note that a dark colored paint job can be changed by many diffrent things. The most common is dust. Any base color, no matter how dark; will be changed with a coat of dust. It will obviously change with 2,3,4, or 5 coats of dust one on top of another. With this in mind make choices of what color to paint based on what time of year you are depicting. Late spring, summer; through to early autumn you can lighten a base of dark green to your hearts content and then defy anyone to prove you wrong. If you are depicting any of the "wet" months of Russia's late autumn winter to early/middle spring, there will not be much dust available to lighten a base color, and you should go for a deeper darker green.
A suggestion to you is to use Google "image" and enter WWII Russian armor T-34,T-34-85,KV-1&2, JS etc, and you will get many many photos of actual vehicles (along with many model kits) to give you an idea of the color of these vehicles. Be aware that old photos and the average computer monitor has a tendency to shift colors away from reality, but not so far off that you can't get a good idea of what Russian armor really looked like.
Tamiya has no dedicated spray color for Russian WWII armor. However the German green should be more than adequate for a base color to use along with weathering depending on which way you want to go as far as summer or winter as a time of year. There are also other choices beyond Tamiya that you can use, but remember again that whatever looks "right to you and that you like is really all that matters. |
