First of all, here is a link to one of the most comprehensive photo gallery of the 56 fights in Budapest:
http://www.fszek.hu/56/Tematikus_HTM_ek/Pest_HTM_ek/Nagykorut_HTM_ek/SztIstvan.htm
This is categorized first by streets/areas, then some of the pics are grouped by their topic. You can navigate between the categories on the dark green bar above the top pictures.
Second, as you can see, soviet tanks did not wear neither red stars nor CCCP letters - these probably came from the memories of the past. The tanks with the red stars (as on the Missing Lynx model and Gerry's archive pics) were the tanks of the Hungarian People's Army. Some of them supported the insurgency, those were mainly marked with the so called Kossuth arm, the traditional Hungarian arm used in the 1848 revolution, but this was not necessary. The rest of the army was either passive or supported the communist government, so probably your grandfather's victim was one of those tanks. |
