Two good points Gerald.

Paint does take years to fade. I did have an illustrator explain to me that although the paint on the actual vehicle is not faded and monochrome the reason to do it on models is to create depth and variations that make the model look less like a toy. He explained all kinds of things about light and how the eye perceives it etc. He even advocated a slight sheen to all flat models for the same reasons. Maybe so but I will say though, his models were stunning.

I noticed at my last IMPS meeting the differences in paint on two Panzer Gray Tigers. Mine (1/35 scale Tamyia) was painted pretty much a solid PG with some highlighting, washes and moderate weathering. A friend brought in a large scale Tamyia Tiger where he varied the paint tone throughout the model. It was subtly done and looked great. It just looked better than mine. It didn't look "faded" but just a tad more "3D" than mine. I think in this case he applied the technique properly.

"Moderation in all things" is a strong point. I always say when it comes to weathering "a little goes a long way." The model is small and too much weathering will look like too much weathering even though the real tanks are filthy. I think both Shep Paine and Tony greenland stated something like, once you think you've done enough weathering, you've done too much.

BTW, good discussion in this thread so far.
