Hi Fred-
I posted a question some time ago on another forum asking if rust had become mandatory? It appears that no one can do a model of an AFV without rust, in some examples, alot of rust. One reply asked "how do you get 50 year old rust on a 2 year old vehicle", a reasonable question. I have seen examples of weathering that look great, trouble is, I've never seen a vehicle that looks like the examples shown. Tank crews had maintenance duties to perform at the end of the day and one of those duties was to check the paint work, any scratches were to be sanded and painted over. My attitude to weathering is what I call "wear and repair", I represent worn or scatched paint with fresh paint meaning I brush on slightly darker paint in areas I think would experience wear.
I agree with your statement: "However, over time certain techniques in model building become command and then even an accepted standard for judging at contests." Strange how these techniques very often do not reresent reality. Are there any photos of a tank in service having rust streaks streaming down the sides?
Cheers-
