but much of the stuff I see is scraped, dented, rusted, scratched, dirty, dinged and often nasty. And it's only in operation a few hours everyday in very controlled conditions, with excellenet maintenance.
Vehicles in combat are rarely maintained up to manufacturers specs... even if the proper maintenance tools and materials are available. Most crew will do enough to ensure their vehicle keeps them alive. Look at what happens to any vehicle with tool holders. look at the areas arouond tool holders where men slap them on a nclamp them in, and then unclamp and yank them off...
Modern peacetime vehicles and construction equipment doesn't traverse bombed out cities and try to negotiate narrow streets or push through hedgerows. Or even take small arms fire like WW2 vehicles in combat. Anywhere metal rubs on metal chipping or wear is likely to occur.
Photographic evidence is rare for the same reason you can't see early war german brown over grey schemes on BW film. They are tonally close to the other colors.
However, i do recall a picture of a brand new LeClerc in MiniTracks magazine a couple of years ago. It had a couple of nice paint scrapes on the turret and panniers... and that guy was cherry. Just proved to me that any paint can get scrapes, all it takes are soldiers willing to scrape it.
Yeah it is often over done. But i firmly beleive it is fairly common during war time and shouldn't be overlooked just because your 1999 M1 didn't chip when on maneuvers, or you doxer didn't scrape as it was being rolled off the low boy. |
