Gary you make some good points, but the bottom line is that nobody really knows, because those who were there were a little too busy to note the chipping pattern on the vehicles around them.
I do understand how old much construction equipment is, but i also know the once the depreciation has run its course, they are gone. And i also know how little time it takes for some of those machines to get worn, scratched and dented.
The point about hard paint is also noted. But take a look at the fenders of many U.S., German, British and Russian vehicles. They are mangled, torn, ripped, dented and generally abused. What happens to HARD paint when the surface it's painted on bends? It either shatters, cracks or chips. It doesn't always conform with the new sheet metal shape.
How about slinging tow cables, sledge hammers, track links, pick axes, pry bars, jack blocks and assorted equipment on the back of a vehicle? think that hard paint will weather that kind of abuse long? What happens when a heavy hatch is dropped against it's supports? Not to mention removing deck panels, turrets and what not.
Like I said it can be way over done. But there is no paint made by men that can't be scratched by soldiers in the field. To ignore it is to ignore common sense. |
