Hi again Fred,
I too use Tamiya Acrylics for priming purposes, on things like figures and some parts of kits. However I think that the experience that you have had is because a primer is designed for a specific purpose, like creating a proper base for the paint coats to grab onto. This means and I am not a chemist, that the primer is chemically made to fulfil the purpose of sealing/preparing often by shrinking and in the case of a laquer based varient, bonding with the plastic surface and is designed so that it can be smoothed and polished, whereas a normal colour paint is only designed as a top coat. I find that primers are a much harder and denser material that allows some form of cutting/polishing, without breaking up like a much thinner paint will.
Hopefully I have not burbled too much and have explained my understanding of the properties of a primer. As an aside have you yet got your Iwata, sitting upon your workbench?
Regards,
John |
