My modeling skills are about as lousy as they get....all I do is dip the part in full-strength future, set it on a paper towel to soak up any excess, and cover it so no dust gets on it while it dries. I stole this trick from some local airplane modelers. Works great every time - the clear plastic looks more 'glass-like" somehow - very smooth and clear.

I would think thinning it wouldn't hurt, but it shouldn't be necessary either.
