You don't need to thin the Future. The keys are (1) perfect cleanliness and (2) no runs or thick areas.
The first one is pretty obvious. If there is any dust, dirt, fingerprints, or scratches, they will be very visible under the coat of Future. In fact, the part will become so clear and bright, that any imperfection is almost magnified. After coating, I set the piece on a piece of new paper towel and cover completely, with no gaps around the bottom, with a bowl or cup. This keeps all dust and dirt from settling on the part while it dries (I usually wait overnight). Sometimes it takes a couple of coats to really get it right. I painted an entire 1/48 scale B-26 Invader over gloss black and decals, and it is stunning (if I say so myself). Did about 6 coats through my airbrush with no thinning. Still looks great after almost 10 years
Depending on the shape and size of the glass, it needs to be supported so that there are no runs or thick areas at the bottom of the part. If there are thick areas or drips or runs, they can be wicked away (while it is still fresh and wet) with the corner of a paper towel or cotton bud (being careful to just touch the drip, and not the part). On A/C canopies, I often just set it down with the edges on the paper towel, and it will draw the excess right off the bottom with no problem.
It takes some practice with different shapes to get the techniques right. The good thing is, you can strip the part quite easily with Windex or any other glass cleaner to try again.
Good luck, and don't give up on the first try or two. |
