Sorry it took a while to get back on this.

When I have a flat panel, I try to stand it on its edge on the towel, as you noted. A couple of techniques I've used: clamp the part across two edges in a clothes pin (think about holding it between your thumb and index finger), also, leaning it at an angle against an edge at the top (against anything that will be a solid support) and an edge on the paper towel at the bottom.
I hope this helps and isn't too confusing.
