mike, there was a period about when you mention that tamiya paints would not brush at all. bottles i have from before and after that time brush passibly, at least for acrylics. tamiya had to have made formula changes on those two occasions. yeah, i keep old paints around forever, or at least as long as they still mix. ive got some humbrol that is at least 30 years old and some poly-s that is nearly that old.
i had a couple of disasters with tamiya and the good old aeromaster acrylics, getting the same glop you mention on mixing, or a never solidifying layer if one were painted over the other. i have used ethanol to thin either without problem, but that was before the ready availability of acrylic thinners. ethanol would clean up the old tamiya pretty well, but it would hardly touch the aeromaster once dried.
for mig and everyone who has used laquer thinners - do you pour off the tamiya liquid first, or just mix the paint with the laquer thinner after thoroughly stirring up the pigment and liquid in the paint bottle. if you don't pour off the tamiya liquid, i wonder what the emulsifier is. does using the lacquer thinner present any clean-up problems or require the use of more lacquer thinner.
best to all,
ctew
