Erik, I have been using Turpentine from the Hardware store or Turpenoid from the art supply store. It cuts oil paints and can be used directly onto the model after painting without a clear coat. But you do need to let the paint dry for a least a couple of days. I as well have used over a clear coat of gloss or clear of both acrylic and enamel with no ill effects. The best way to apply the washes is to do a pin wash with a pointed brush, I first apply clean turpentine to the area and then apply a wet wash to the specific area and let it flow. For more detailed washes or weathering I like to use Glenn Bartolotti’s method. You can see it what I am talking about at the last couple of entries on his blog;
