I have just picked up modeling again after about a decade and noticed a lot of new really great techniques being used since last I checked in. I've done some research and experimenting but still have a few questions perhaps someone won't mind responding to.

1. Pre-shading and post-shading - I read a nice article on the subject which instructs me to spray the vehicle black first, then when dry go over it with base color at about a 45 degree angle, letting the black darken the shadows. When I try I can't seem to keep from obliterating most of the black in my effort to get a good solid base coat on that will stand up to weathering. The results I got were almost negligable. Wondering what I'm doing wrong. Also saw a tutorial on youtube in which the modeller sprayed seam lines in black, then went over entire model with base coat, allowing dark to show through at seams. But again, how does one get a good base coat on without obscuring the black undercoat completely? These paints are pretty opaque.

Also, if someone could tell me how to post-shade, I haven't found an article on that yet and am only guessing at how its done.

2. Machine guns and small arms - in the old days we used to paint them black, then drybrush with silver I believe, or paint them with gunmetal. How do people finish those items these days?

3. Headlights - Used to paint these silver mixed with white, and if I remember the more ambitious would hollow them out, paint the insides white or silver, then fill them with a resin or clear glue. What are people doing currently?

I appreciate anyone reading through all this and responding, thanks so much.
