Hi Giglio,

welcome back at the hobby! Here are my thoughts:
1. not sure what can be the problem, just guessing, that you need a couple thin and opaque layers. The point is that at the final phase you only spray the middle of the panels with the base colour, leaving a slightly darker colour around details as recess lines, panels, bolts etc, reaching the clear base tone. Now the post shading is the same, done after the basecoat, mist these details with a slightly darker colour, and/or mist the center of bigger surfaces, panels with lighter colour, this visually separates the parts of the surfaces and gives a more in scale effect and dept (with some artistic license).

2.better to paint them with black and gray shades (with a little blue, green-eg. US M16, orange, or rust - not intended to act as rust, but as different shades of metal finish, see original pictures), add a satin or gloss finish if needed, wear/scrathes can be presented with lighter gray and maybe a little matt varnish drybrush to break up the surface. A little mettalic medium/gun metal can be also added though. Definiately get good references, colour factory photos show well the shades and finishes.

3.get thin clear lens specially made for this and hollow out the the original. Do a search on it, no company names in my head right now, but this is the perfect solution :)

Hope it helps and to see your latest work soon! Happy modelling!
