Yes, dilute them with water. It becomes handy to purchase some applicators for each color. I use them a lot in aircraft and 1/72 tanks and they work fine. I use mud to create heavy mud on selected areas, but I don't abuse, as I would normally have a coat of dirt sprayed before hand. I mix colours to make it look like both dry and wet mud. I would think for larger scales you better choose pigments, powders and these sticks combined to achieve realistic effects, as alone they wouldn't be as affective.
