You can run pretty much any airbrush from a can of air although you only get 10-12 minutes total spray time, but its not continuous since the cans ice up and have to warm back up to continue spraying. As you use the can, they ice up and the pressure drops...

External mix brushes work sort of like a garden sprayer... the air passing over the paint jar sucks the paint up through a conical needle. You adjust the flow by turning an external cone shaped cover over the inner needle attached to the jar.


External mix bruhes are usually pretty easy to use and clean... few small parts. Down side is they tend to have a bit less adjustability and don't do as well for small detail work. Like you would have a hard time doing 1/72 Luftwaffe camo with one, but for 1/35 work its probably fine and reliable.

The Badger 350 and Paasche H are common external mix brushes.
