Depending on where you live a compressor can be pretty cheap. In the US, you can get inexpensive tank compressors from Wal Mart, Harbor Freight, etc. I bought a small name brand tank compressor from Wal Mart with a pressure regulator and moisture trap for about $75. Works fine. Harbor Freight sells some cheap knock offs of Badger or Paasche compressors. They aren't great, but anything is better than a can. For years I used a small WR Brown pison compressor with no regulator or moisture trap and really had no problems. Ultimately the compressor wore out but only after 25 years.

Of course getting a good compressor is always best. Depends on what money you have available or how much you will use it.

For base coats and one color schemes, I have had excellent results with Tamiya's spray paints. Or consider say if you are painting a Panther tank, spray it with Tamiya dark yellow paint from the can, then use the airbrush with an air can to do the camouflage pattern.
