This enters into the area of personal choice. Honestly, I paint tracks
several different methods depending on the kit and the effect I want.
For dirty, dusty, road-worn metal tracks, I paint them a base color of
dark chocolate brown. On top of this I will add washes of black, rust
brown, etc., in layers to build up depth. Then I drybrush the tracks
with brown, tan, earth, etc., again in layers. Lastly I drybrush the
track with a dark metal color like Gunze's Steel Red Metallic or Burnt
Iron. Tamiya's Gunmetal works, also. Make sure there is no gloss to
the final track. I mix acrylic flat base (Tamiya or Gunze) in with the
gloss Tamiya or Gunze metallics.
For a metallic look that is less dirty, I paint the tracks with Steel
Red, Burnt Iron or Gunmetal, then add a wash of brown. On top of this I
drybrush more metallics like steel.
For rubber block tracks, you can use the first method but be careful not
to drybrush metallic paints on the rubber areas. Weathered rubber
blocks can be brown, tan, grey, etc., according to the amount of wear
you prefer and "road conditions" |
