Hi Doug

Are you worried the airbrushing will damage the handrails, or that you'll leave ghost patterns there? Or is it the masking that will wreck the rails. Would the camo pattern cover the rails too? Ships are new to me...

I have a book on the Tirpitz, and some of the camo schemes used in Norway look a bear to reproduce.

I got the Italeri HMS Hood in the mail today. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!! There are so many little parts, and the detail is incredible. It's 1/720 scale, and the boats are beautiful. I've seen some of the resin Italian Cruisers. The detail on those is absolutely amazing. Actually, given the detail on some of these injection molded ships, I don't understand why small scale armor is not better done (Revell Germany's recent offerings aside). I
haven't seen many of the little East European kits, but there appears to be quite a gap between 1/700 and 1/72!!

I did my first 1/72 scale armor kit as a quick diversion (The Revell Panther D/A). Nice kit, and it didn't take me long to start adding things. I replaced the hatch handles, and a few other things. Now, no longer a 'quick' diversion. What I find harder in small scale is to get the thing to look like a miniature representation of reality (not that I succeed with 1/35, it's just closer most of the time). The in house critic, my lovely wife,
often says "It still looks like plastic." after I finish painting, weathering etc. I'm sure model ships will be yet another challenge!

I'll never understand modellers who look down on someone else's work. I could give a rat's ass about car models. But I can still marvel over some of the ones I've seen at shows. Likewise AAAbait, Sci-fi figures and so on. There are some incredible pieces out there. A similar disease appears to infect figure modellers. I've read many things poo-pooing Warhammer figures. Those people need to be forced to surf the cool mini or not website for a
few hours! There are some wargames figures that are superb, and I'm talking about the basic kit, before someone like MIG gets to it!

Anyway, we are all brothers (and sisters)...

Yeesh, I must have heard too many carols today!!!!!

I'd love to see your Zuikaku now and when it's done!

Cheers
Andy
