Why there are so many people complain about the Dragon kits. While I was viewing those negetive comments, I opened my panther box constantly to see what pissed people so much, but I could hardly find one.
I know it is disapointting to see a "most accurate 1/72 model ever made" has vinyl tracks and parts that is supossed to be motorized. And I personaly don't like their M1 series either. But for the elefant and panther, it's not that bad isn't it?
Yes they may not be the "perfect 1/72 plastic model",
with individual track links, PE parts and all that,
but considering the price, you can't really expect them to do it like they did for the 1/35 ones. I remember a while ago people are complaining about the price is getting higher and higher for Braille scale models. Dragon has made a stop on that, and once again this hobby of ours is affordable.
In my opinion they surely made a lot of efforts to give us these delicate parts(such as the gun barrel, correct road wheels, seprate tools....)
To me that's a big improvement amoung other manufactors. How many companies are willing to advance their molding technolegy to make a gun barrel like that? For people who like to superdetail their models, they probably will buy aftermarket products such as PE parts or gun barrels for their $15 UM kit or $10 Revell kit, and that's an over $30 investment for one single model. Dragon provides a cheap "base model", which gives us more options on how you want to use these models. I mean you can buy a bunch of them without getting bankrupted. You can build it OOB, superdetailing it, or use it as parts for other projects. I would not buy a second BT-5 from UM just for "other projects" because its way too expensive.
Toy like? "only suitable for begginers or young modellers?" I don't think so. If you consider yourself as a pro, you should have a dremel or some jeweler's tool at home to improve that metal hull. And 2-part Epoxy adhesive works pretty good on vinyl tracks too. What I am saying is, if you want to make it a good display model, there are many ways to achieve that goal. It's not like you "have to", but you "can." And none of the model kits out there can be built into a contest candidate if you build it OOB. Talking about "toy like", to me tools molded on the hull is more "toy like". But again I can decide if I want to leave them like that or sand them off. It all depends on how you want to make the model.
This is just my opinion on Dragon models. I am not criticizing anybody, nor want to offend my fellow small scale modellers. I just felt sorry for Dragon when seeing there are more negetive comments than positive to their first try. I will keep buying their products and see if they are getting improved. And I'll start building my panther soon and prove that it worth every penny I paid for the model.
Happy modeling! |
