Forums - Modelling / Smallscale

The construction forum is for the discussion of small scale AFV modelling. Usually this refers to 1-76th and 1-72nd scale AFVs.

I bought a set of 1/72 Hongwell/Cararama Series III Landrovers today at Modelmania in Melbourne (there is an Australian Modelmania website but it's a different company based in Queensland).

The set I bought has three models with soft-top covers. They are a white UN version, a camoulaged green UK version and a Gulf War ambulance. The other three models have have hard-top cabins over the driving compartment and disappointing soft plastic roll bars and canopy hoops. One is a UN vehicle with the blue world symbol and the other two are civilian versions in buff and blue (RAF perhaps). All have the spare tyre on the bonnet and some of the soft tops have transparent windows.

The tyres are rubber (or vinyl) with tread that is pretty close to the Steel Trek radial tread. The bumper bars have a chrome finish and the well-detailed diffs, transfer case and exhaust are silver. Axles are steel rods and the wheels are loose fitting and can move laterally.

They accurately represent a 1/72 scale model Landrover, with the Landrover logo on the correct shaped grill, accurate head lights and even the detail around the door handles. One negative is poor fit of the soft-top around the doors but that should be able to be fixed.

I think that they can be dis-assembled by drilling out three rivets. I'll be trying that anyway.

There is another set of UK emergency and utility Landrovers in bright reds, blues, etc. All have soft-top canopies and could be militarised with a coat of green paint.

By the way, two of the models are attached to the pack by plastic coated wire (that might prove useful). The other three have a plastic plate with a threaded rod that has to be unscrewed for removal.

Hongwell/Cararama also have several new 4WD utes that could be useful for dioramas, etc.

At around AUD2.50 each, I will find it hard to resist a few more Landrover sets. But I may have to buy another tin of WEM Colourcoats Australian Olive Drab.
