Two things I do:
1. I use a circle template to locate the center of the piece. You can find them in the drafting section of an arts supply store. Each circle on the template comes with four small notches or lines at right angles to each other, dividing the circle into fourths if they were all connected. When you find the template that's close to the diameter, you can draw across the piece from one notch/line to its 180 degree counterpart. the intersection of the resulting two lines should give you the center.
2. I also use steel cutter bits to start my drilling for barrels and the like. They tend to cut into the plastic easier and provide much more control. If I slip a bit with them, the mistake is easily rectified using a large steel cutter bit, then using 'regular' drill bits to finish the hole.
By accident on a kit exhaust pipe I discovered that steel cutter bits tend to thin the sides out more than the middle, leaving a conical, funnel shaped hole. Not great for most gun barrels, but a neat and, depending on the tail pipe or muffler being modeled, accurate effect. |
