My method is also to drill (assuming we are referring to very small scale items such as MGs and 1/72nd scale stuff).
I prepare by giving the kit part a dirty wash before I remove any seams. The end of the barrel is now perfectly divided in half by the mold line. Far easier to start poking with a needle tip before drilling.
After marking the center, I normally use a NEW blade to start the hole (especially useful on conical flash hiders found on German MGs). After a few twists, I use a smaller than needed dril bit (R & J Enterprises used to sell #82 bits) and increase slowly until one size larger (paint takes care of that).
