Hi Stephan,
I read that article too and it struck me as odd also. Just going
on intuition, Id say the modeller was going for the look of a newly field replaced gun perhaps. Id think they had them primered before leaving the factory, but maybe they were just oiled as the Germans were short of paint by the time of the King Tigers? Im sure that a gun barrel left natural metal would have been a nice rusty orange by the end of one night without some protective coating. Just my thoughts on it.
