Forums - Modelling / Smallscale

The construction forum is for the discussion of small scale AFV modelling. Usually this refers to 1-76th and 1-72nd scale AFVs.

Here's what I do:

I will assemble completely, unpainted, the drive sprocket and idler, and fix these on the model without using glue, relying on friction to keep them in place. Next, I'll do the same with only the backs of the road wheels and return rollers. From this point, I'll glue and assemble the tracks around the suspension components, until the entire run is done. Do the same with the other side. The idea is that you should now have an almost complete suspension you could easily slip on and off the model. Do that now. Next, I'll spray these components a suitable color, usually dependent on what I want the end result to be, but either black or a dark brown, or sometimes a sandy color (if the model will be set in dusty conditions), weather, handpaint (or mask) the wheel components, and then glue on the outer parts of the road wheels and return rollers after they've been painted and detailed. The result is a very strong assembly, realistic because all of it has been weathered together (giving it a bit of unity), but still easy to assemble.

BTW, I do something very similar for 1/35 scale.

Damon.
